Frequently asked questions

How do I become a first aid trainer?
You need a current First Aid at Work certificate, a teaching qualification and an assessing qualification (if not covered by your teaching qualification). You then build course experience — FAIB looks for at least 6 first aid courses per year over 3 years. Once qualified, join the FAIB Trainer/Assessor register for £20 + VAT per year and start teaching for FAIB training providers.
I have no training experience yet. Can I still join?
Yes. New trainers show evidence of 2 practical and 2 theory training or assessing sessions delivered under a qualified assessor. FAIB also runs a Trainer Verification Course designed for new trainers to prove their teaching and assessing skills. Complete that and you can join the register.
Do I have to register with FAIB to teach for a FAIB training provider?
Yes. All trainers and assessors working for a FAIB training provider must be registered. Freelance trainers register once and are free to work for any FAIB training provider, without being added to each centre. Training providers have details in their members pack on how to add a trainer to their centre.
How do I find work as a first aid trainer?
Joining the register as a freelance trainer automatically adds you to the list to receive trainer requests from FAIB training providers. Your best chance of finding work is through the FAIB Network private Facebook group, where you can connect with training providers and experienced trainers across the industry.
What courses will I teach?
FAIB training providers run First Aid at Work, Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, Emergency Paediatric First Aid, Basic Life Support and more. Your training provider gives you access to the FAIB lesson plans, assessment papers and question papers for the courses you deliver, and you must cover all the elements of assessment for each FAIB qualification you teach.
Is a first aid trainer the same as a first aid instructor?
Yes — first aid trainer, first aid instructor and trainer/assessor all describe the same role: someone qualified to teach and assess first aid courses. If you are looking for a first aid instructor course, the qualifications above and the first aid train the trainer courses are the route in.
Want to run your own courses instead?
Many freelance trainers take the next step and set up as a FAIB Training Provider — running their own courses, issuing their own certificates and keeping full control of their business, with all teaching materials included. See how to become a first aid training provider.
