Frequently asked questions

How do I become a first aid training provider in the UK?
You need three things: a current First Aid at Work certificate (or equivalent), a formal teaching qualification, and evidence of your training experience. You then register with an accreditation body so employers can trust the certificates you issue. FAIB registration costs £350 + VAT per year and includes lesson plans, PowerPoints and assessment papers, so you can start teaching straight away.
Can I run my own first aid courses?
Yes — with the right qualifications you can start your own first aid training business. You need a current First Aid at Work certificate, a teaching qualification and evidence of training experience. FAIB accreditation then lets you run your own courses and issue your own certificates, with all the teaching materials provided. Many FAIB training providers started exactly this way.
Do I need accreditation to deliver first aid training?
The Health & Safety Executive does not force you to join a particular scheme. Employers, however, must carry out due diligence on the training providers they use, so accreditation from a recognised industry body gives them the assurance they need. FAIB is an ISO 9001 certified body, and certificates issued by FAIB training providers are accepted by the HSE and the Department for Education/Ofsted. FAIB carries out that due diligence for you.
How does FAIB compare with other accreditation routes?
FAIB first aid qualifications are at the very least equivalent to those of other nationally recognised awarding organisations and the Voluntary Aid Societies. The difference is cost and simplicity: no per-certificate fees, less bureaucracy, and teaching materials included in your membership. When comparing equivalent qualifications, evidence shows FAIB is the most cost-effective option.
Can I issue my own certificates?
Yes. You issue your own FAIB-accredited certificates at no extra cost, so your customers receive them instantly with no third-party delays. Certificates carry your brand, which strengthens your business. FAIB’s structure saves the average training provider £1,000s a year in certificate costs compared with per-certificate schemes.
What teaching materials are included?
Your membership includes lesson plans, assessment sheets, multiple-choice question papers and course PowerPoints, covering all the standards FAIB requires. You access everything through the FAIB members area, plus exclusive member discounts on FAIB’s own first aid training books.
What courses can I run as a FAIB provider?
FAIB providers run First Aid at Work, Emergency First Aid at Work, Paediatric First Aid, Emergency Paediatric First Aid, Basic Life Support and more. Download the full list of FAIB regulated first aid courses below.
Want to teach first aid rather than run a training business?
Then the Trainer/Assessor register is for you. Every trainer working for a FAIB training provider joins the register for £20 + VAT per year — see how to become a first aid trainer.
